Rotary Valves for Cement and Building Materials

Cement plants run the harshest continuous duty in bulk solids handling: hot clinker dust, abrasive raw meal, fine fly ash and a process that must not stop. Rotary valves sit at every transfer point — under the preheater, on the mill circuit, under the ESP and baghouse hoppers, and at silo and bulk loading.

Where the valve sits in a cement plant

Raw meal and kiln feed circuits use the valve as a metering and sealing element between the feed bin and the aerated conveying line. In the finish mill circuit it discharges separator rejects and returns them to the mill. Under electrostatic precipitators and bag filters it works as the discharge airlock that keeps false air out of the dust collector while releasing collected dust continuously. At the silo and packing plant it controls gravity discharge into screw or air-slide conveyors.

What actually fails

In cement service the enemy is a combination of abrasion and heat. Raw meal with high silica content grinds the rotor tips and the housing bore; clinker dust at 150–250 °C attacks bearings and seals; and false air drawn through a worn valve reduces collection efficiency at the baghouse and disturbs the mill circuit. Valves that were adequate when new become a maintenance item within months if the wear path was not designed in.

How we build for this duty

Housing liners and hard-faced rotor tips are the baseline, with ceramic tiling where the silica load is high. Bearings are outboard, sized for start-up under a full pocket, and protected by a purgeable seal so that neither dust nor heat reaches the bearing cavity. Where the plant operates the kiln at elevated temperature, we build with high-temperature clearances and a heat-resistant paint system on the external surfaces.

Selection notes

Ask for the material bulk density, the dust load, the temperature at the valve and the allowable false air before sizing. A valve that is oversized runs at low pocket fill, which increases leakage per tonne conveyed; a valve that is undersized wears faster because it has to run faster than the design speed.
